NFL Betting Online: The Chiefs shocked the football world last season by winning the AFC West, but most wise guys expect a regression in 2011.
Kansas City was aided by one of the easiest schedules in football last year. Oddsmakers aren’t expecting another 10-win season as the team’s regular season win total is being offered at eight games, and the under is carrying a -135 juice. The Chiefs NFL football odds to repeat as division winners are +225, second behind San Diego.
This is still a young team that has loads of upside with guys like Jamal Charles, Dexter McCluster Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry and Brandon Flowers. Toddy Haley is molding these men into the players that work in his often-maniacal system. Like the Lions and Rams of the NFC, this team should be competing for championships in a few years.
But we saw just how immature this team can be during last year’s postseason. Playing with a sizable home-field edge at Arrowhead, the Chiefs were steamrolled by Baltimore, 30-7, in the opening round.
Some believe current gunslinger Matt Cassel is the answer but he’s just another USC quarterback flop. The offense was very vanilla in his first season as a starter and he still struggled to execute.
Haley must open the playbook more for Cassel in 2011 because defenses will be keying in on the run. But taking off the training wheels may do more harm than good.
Thomas Jones and Charles powered the top-ranked rushing offense in the game last season as the Chiefs averaged 164.2 yards per game on the ground. That unit added Le'Ron McClain at fullback during the free agency period.
The addition of Steve Breaston gives the Chiefs another dimension at receiver. He’s more of a blazer while Dwayne Bowe is a big-bodied, red-zone, possession-type of receiver. But the depth chart currently shows Jonathan Baldwin starting opposite of Bowe. Reports from camp have been nothing but glowing for the rookie.
Dennis Green did a great job with a young defense last season. Kansas City gave up 20.4 points per and were also better than average in yardage allowed (330.2 ypg).
After a soft schedule in 2010, the Chiefs are graced with the third-toughest slate this season. With most expecting them to not qualify for the postseason, the Chiefs have Super Bowl odds of +3500 and NFL football odds to win the AFC at +2000.
