NFL Betting Online: By all accounts in the world of football, the Colts endured a down season in 2010, yet they still won the division.

Indianapolis claimed the AFC South for the seventh time out of the last eight years with a 10-6 record. The team went 8-7-1 against the spread while finishing with a 10-5-1 NFL betting lines over/under mark.

Taking the over in Colts games is never a bad option with NFL lines. They played to 10 of them last year because the defense yielded points (24.3 ppg) and the offense averaged 27.2 points a game.

Peyton Manning registered his lowest quarterback rating since 2002 with 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last year. His numbers were down, and turnovers up, because the offense couldn’t escape the injury bug.

Reliable tight end Dallas Clark only played six games while receivers Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez and Pierre Garcon all missed at least two games.

For the Colts to have success in 2011, this crop of receivers must stay healthy. Because like most seasons, the offense is going to have to put up points as the defense gives them up.

Stopping the run is still the most pressing issue on defense. The Colts allowed 127.0 yards per game on the ground last season. In the Week 1 opening loss to Houston, Arian Foster averaged 7.0 yards a carry on his way to a 231-yard, three-touchdown performance.

And when the opponent can run the ball and chew up clock, Manning is standing on the sidelines. The Texans weren’t reinventing the wheel; the book has been out on Indy’s toothless run defense for years.

Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis can get after the quarterback and protect outside runs, but the middle has a gaping hole. Indy needs depth at the tackle and linebacker positions. The team signed right linebacker Ernie Sims in hopes that he can be the player he never was in Detroit.

Manning took less money in his long-term contract extension so Joseph Addai could be re-signed. Addai understands the Colts system better than any back so there won’t be a dropoff at that position.

And as long as Manning is standing upright, this club will be a contender year in and year out. The Texans are once again a trendy pick to win the division, but are you ready to bet against this trend: the Colts haven’t missed the playoffs in 12 straight years. And we know the Wild Card team is coming from either the East or North.
