NFL Betting Online: For some strange reason, there are a lot of bettors buying into the notion that the Browns will be an improved football team in 2011.
Improvement is relative however. And these bettors are only looking at a win total. Cleveland won five games last season but its 2011 NFL Vegas odds regular season win total was released at 6.5 at BookMaker, and was weighted toward the over at -130.
The Browns were one of the worst teams to bet on last year, finishing 5-11 against the NFL odds spread. Most weeks, the offense couldn’t keep up with its counterpart while posting 16.9 points per game – the second-lowest average in the league.
Mike Holmgren took over football operations prior to last season and he made the decision to fire head coach Eric Mangini at the end of it. Pat Shurmur enters the league as a rookie head coach.
But the major problems on this team weren’t with the coaching staff. We’d even argue the Browns brass made a huge mistake by letting go of Rob Ryan. He is one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL and produced a better-than-average defense last season with less-than-average personnel.
No, the primary issue for Cleveland is at quarterback. The trio of Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy combined to throw all of 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 2010. They averaged a pitiful 5.8 yards per pass attempt.
Delhomme is gone but McCoy and Wallace would be nothing more than backups on any other team. The second-year signal caller out of Texas is in line to start this season. Calling McCoy’s rookie campaign pedestrian would be a compliment.
The Browns also need a few superstars. Running back Peyton Hillis had a breakout season in 2010 but wore down because of a career high in carries (270). After drafting a superior fullback in Owen Marecic, Hillis may take less of a beating this year.
Two other legit offensive weapons on this team are Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi, but both have battled injuries and neither are household names, which is what the Browns need.
Don’t expect any high-scoring shootouts in Cleveland contests this season. The only way this team is going to win is if the defense limits the opposing team.
Oddsmakers expect the Browns to finish third in the AFC North behind Baltimore and Pittsburgh, evidenced by their NFL Vegas odds to win at +1000. They have a +4000 price to win the conference and odds of +7500 to capture their first Super Bowl title.
