NFL Betting Online: Oddsmakers anticipate a slight improvement for the Buffalo Bills in 2011, but in order for that to transpire the defense must produce.

The Bills finished fourth in the East last year with a 4-12 record. They went 8-7-1 against the spread and posted a 7-9 over/under mark. Buffalo is picked to finish last in the division again, carrying NFL football odds to win price of +2000.

The major problem last season was defending the run. The Bills had the worst run defense in the league (169.6 ypg) and gave up more than 200 yards rushing in eight games.

Chan Gailey tried to install a 3-4 defense but just didn’t have the adequate personnel to execute it. The team moved back to a 4-3 midseason but the damage was already done. Nick Barnett was added at linebacker during free agency but the Bills lost a better tackler and player in Paul Posluszny.

Buffalo has a decent secondary with safety Jairus Byrd and cornerback Leodis McKelvin. The team surrendered an average of 26.6 points a game last year, which ranked 28th in the NFL.

Gailey is considered to be an offensive guru but the numbers didn’t reflect that in his first season in Buffalo. The Bills ranked 28th in scoring offense behind an average of 17.7 points per game.

The offense has talent but it flutters against superior defenses, which the AFC is loaded with.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the incumbent starting quarterback. He has a good head on his shoulders coming out of Harvard and isn’t afraid to throw a ball into tight coverage. But as fans witnessed throughout the career of Brett Favre, a brave passer doesn’t always yield the best results.

Stevie Johnson had a breakout 2010 season with 82 catches, 10 touchdowns and 1,073 yards. The Bills acquired Brad Smith during free agency and he will provide versatility as a receiver, running back and possibly quarterback.

C.J. Spiller is a dynamic running back and kick returner but his rookie season was marred by injury. For the offense to really take shape this season, he must be on the field.

The Bills should be better all around in 2011 but unfortunately for them, they play in the ultra-competitive AFC East. BookMaker opened their NFL odds regular season win total at 5.5 games with the under carrying a juice of -129. They have the second-most difficult schedule in the league this year.

Buffalo currently holds NFL football odds of +7500 to win the conference and +15000 to win Super Bowl XLVI in February.
