The National Football League is king in the world of sports.
As the summer buzz wears off, fans and gamblers alike are pining for pigskin action. There is no better place on the planet to bet on football than BookMaker sportsbook.
The 2013 NFL season kicks off with 65 preseason games. The first is the Hall of Fame Game, which will take place on Sunday, August 4, between the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins. The subsequent four weeks will feature full slates of 16 preseason games apiece.
The NFL preseason is a perfect place to hone your handicapping skills before the regular season begins. BookMaker will post spreads, totals and moneylines for every preseason matchup.
And because there are 11 nationally-televised games on the schedule, which will showcase the 12 playoff teams from 2012, BookMaker will offer live preseason odds. You can watch the action unfold on television and make in-game wagers during commercials and timeouts.
Matchups during the preseason are determined by no rhyme or reason. No division opponents play and rarely will you see two teams that are scheduled to face each other during the regular season square off. In the rare case that it happens, don't expect either team to be showing their cards.
The teams that play in the Hall of Fame Game end up playing five exhibitions compared to four. It's a double-edged sword because they get more practice but it's also taxing. The Cowboys will only have four days off and a trip to the West Coast between their first and second preseason game.
Most of the gambling public shies away from preseason action but sharp bettors feast on it. It's a fact, lines are softer. Oddsmakers don't invest as much time on them during the preseason because there isn't a big handle.
But if you want to win big like the professional gamblers do, there are three key areas of handicapping you must consider in order to cash in on odds during the preseason.
The first is quarterback rotation. Starting quarterbacks are normally going to be on the field in limited fashion during the preseason. Most of the work is divvied up between the second-, third- and fourth-string signal callers. Having an idea of the quarterback rotation and what each player brings to the table when he's in the game is a great way to win money during the preseason.
The second handicapping factor during the NFL preseason is coaching motivation. There are some coaches that could care less about the preseason. They don't want their players injured and view the preseason as a waste of time.
And then there are other coaches, like Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, that want to put forth maximum effort on every snap of every preseason game so they can establish team tempo or sort out the starting lineup, depth chart and personnel groupings.
A rookie coach or a coach with a new team is usually a good bet because these guys have something to prove. They want to show their fans that the season outlook is good. Last year, Tampa Bay head coach Greg Schiano began his preseason career with a 20-7 win at Miami as an underdog.
The third angle is position battles. If a team has no clear-cut starter at a certain position then the coaching staff might be more inclined to focus on that position during the preseason. For instance, there are a handful of players vying for the Giants tailback job. Kevin Gilbride already knows what he has in the passing game so he might call more run plays this preseason, which in turn could lead to unders cashing.
You'll always want to use the media as a handicapping tool. In this age of cyberspace, we have team news at the click of a button. Read the local newspapers to dig up gameplan and playing time information. Check out each team's website and look for quotes from coaches and players.
If you see a piece of information you like, make a bet. If you see something that goes against your pre-existing bet, hedge and eat the juice. NFL lines during the preseason will move more than those during the regular season because of last-minute information delivered by the media. You just have to react to it quicker than the bookies.

NFL Odds - Spread Movements for Week 14 of the Regular Season
NFL Betting Online: There are a couple of spreads the bookies are withholding from the betting public in Week 14. As of Thursday night, we still haven’t seen odds for the Falcons at Packers contest as well as the matchup between the Browns and Patriots. Both games are off the board because of injuries to quarterbacks. Cleveland has a couple of concussed QBs in Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden.... Continue Reading
