He defended it with a unanimous decision victory over Pat Curran, but lost the belt after Michael Chandler defeated him with a submission on November 19th, 2011. Alvarez bounced back by knocking out Shinya Aoki in his most recent fight in April, avenging one of his three career losses. Alvarez has a career record of 23-3, but his contract with Bellator ends after this bout, so it remains to be seen if he stays or not moving forward.

Patrick Pitbull Freire is 10-3 in his career. He has previously fought for a Bellator Lightweight title, so he has experience on a big stage. Freire lost his last fight to Lloyd Woodard by submission and has dropped two of his past three bouts. The other loss came to Chandler via unanimous decision, which proves both of these fighters have had trouble with Chandler in the past. Pitbull has also defeated Toby Imada, so this is a clash that could be hotly contested.
