Cycling Betting Online: Cash in on Professional Cycling betting as the Giro d’Italia spans three weeks, beginning on Saturday, May 7 in Turin, Italy and finishing up on Sunday, May 29 in Milan, Italy.

The Giro d’Italia, or the Tour of Italy, is a professional cycling course that tests some of the best riders in the world. It is a three-week race with 21 different stages, beginning in Turin and ending in a time trial race in Milan. This year, a total of 23 teams and 207 riders will participate in the event. The normal maximum is 200 teams, but since this is the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, an exception has been granted to allow more cyclists.

This year’s race is more challenging than those in years past. There are four flat stages this season, compared to a minimum of six and a maximum of eight in the past five years. There are six medium mountain stages, compared to a minimum of four and a maximum of seven the past five years, and there are eight mountain stages, which is two more than at any Giro d’Italia in any of the past five years. It also has eight mountain top finishes, which is between two and four more than at any time since 2004.

Ivan Baso won the Tour of Italy last year for the second time. He is only the second repeat winner since Paolo Savoldelli pulled the feat in 2002 and 2005. Basso’s previous victory came in 2006. Denis Menchov won the race in 2009 and Alberto Contador captured it in 2008. The 2008 race was the only time Contador has participated in this race, but he plans to again this year. He has said in interviews that he is making this race a priority, so that’s something to keep in mind. Contador may be the most talented rider on the circuit, and he is the right choice if you want to pick the winner in professional cycling betting in the Giro d’Italia.

2011 Giro d'Italia Results

Alberto Contador nabbed his second Giro d'Italia title after finishing in top-3 in the event’s 21st and final stage time-trial Sunday in Milan.

Contador sealed his sixth career grand tour victory after ending up third in the 26 km stage time trial, clocking 36 seconds behind time trial winner Britain's David Millar (30 minutes and 13 seconds).

His third-place effort allowed him six minutes and 10 seconds ahead of Italy’s Michele Scarponi in the overall classification.

Contador, three-time Tour de France champion, took the pink jersey on the 9th stage and built his lead from that point.

After overcoming doping allegation early this year, the 28-year-old Spanish pedal-pusher is in position to capture both Giro d'Italia and Tour de France title at the same time.

Marco Pantani was the last man to win both Giro d'Italia and Tour de France titles in the same year in 1998.
