Stage 1: The Giro d’Italia kicks off on May 7 with a team time trial to get the blood flowing, beginning in Venaria Reale and finishing up 21.5 kilometers later in Turin. It is the second shortest stage among the 21, longer than only Stage 16’s individual time trial at a distance of 13 kilometers in Belluno, Nevegal. The teams would like to make their marks early, although a fast start isn’t imperative, as there is plenty of ground to cover the rest of the way.

Two years after their debut Grand Tour win at the Giro, HTC-Highroad was back for another win this year, powering to a 10 second lead over Team Radioshack and 22 seconds ahead of Italian squad Liquigas.

HTC-Highroad’s Mark Cavendish got the leader’s pink jersey two years ago. This year it went to the team’s Italian (and national time trial champion), arco Pinotti. “It’s a great honor for me to wear the pink jersey. The victory, however, belongs to the whole team. I cannot thank the guys enough.”
