Sergio's Win Exposes Major Flaws in Julio Cesar's Game
Sergio Martinez's trash talk was built on the premise that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was an unworthy and flawed middleweight champion.
Well, he was right. And he has the WBC middleweight title to prove it.
Martinez's win over the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. on Saturday night in Las Vegas exposed some major flaws in Chavez Jr.'s boxing game.
The Mexican was no match for the 37-year-old Argentine, who was more aggressive and quicker than Chavez throughout the fight. There's a reason why Chavez's 12th round knockdown didn't win him the fight: He didn't do enough in the previous 11 rounds to give Martinez a reason to stay down.
Chavez looked slower and ate countless right jabs throughout the fight, rivaling a punching bag. Martinez showed the younger fighter that he has ways to go before being considered a top pound-for-pound boxer.
Chavez, 11 years younger than Martinez, looked hesitant to throw punches early on and ultimately landed his most devastating punch after the fight had been decided in the final round. Martinez was the decisive winner heading into the last few minutes.
Chavez struggled to move with Martinez and showed tremendous inexperience going up against a tricky southpaw. Sure, he has never stepped inside the ring with a lefty as skilled as Martinez, but he looked unprepared in how he dealt with jabs and body shots.
It's back to the drawing board now for Chavez. His 12th round heroics will surely have those in the boxing world clamoring for a rematch. But unless he addresses the glaring holes in his game, he won't be a threat to defeat Martinez anytime soon.
Boxing Betting Lines: If you're looking for the best advice for MMA wagering, you've certainly come to the right place. Here at Bookmaker sportsbook, we're previewing the WBC middleweight title fight between Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Sergio Martinez on Saturday, September 15th, 2012 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. is undefeated in his professional career and is the current WBC middleweight champion, but he will be the underdog in the much-anticipated matchup with Sergio Martinez on Saturday, September 15th, 2012 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cesar Chavez, Jr. is the son of the former boxing champion with the same name and has forged himself quite the impressive career with a record of 46-0-1 and 32 knockouts. However, Cesar Chavez, Jr. is currently listed as a +165 underdog to win this bout. Martinez is the favorite at -195 in boxing wagering. The over-under on the number of rounds this fight lasts is 11 ½, with the over being wagered at -175 and then under at +145.
Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. captured the WBC middleweight title on June 4th, 2011 by majority decision over Sebastian Zbik. He has since retained it with victories over Peter Manfredo, Jr. (TKO), Marco Antonio Rubio (unanimous decision), and Andy Lee (technical knockout). He is only 26 years old so is still in the prime of his career, and it"s going to take an extraordinary fighter to knock off Cesar Chavez, Jr.
However, Sergio Martinez could be that guy. Martinez has a career record of 49-2-2 and his recent wins have been impressive. Martinez lost a fight to Paul Williams on December 5th, 2009 but avenged that by knocking him out less than a year later. Martinez also has a recent win over Kelly Pavlik that gave him the Ring, WBC and WBO middleweight titles. He still currently hold The Ring middleweight belt.
Martinez is 37 years old, so he is on the downside of his career, but he has fought very well at the highest level for a long time. Cesar Chavez, Jr. may be the current WBC middleweight champion, but he will be the underdog to Martinez in this one. One of these fighters will unify the middleweight belts and this should be a fantastic matchup in boxing wagering.
