Alexander beats Maidana with 10-round decision

Devon Alexander, in his first fight in the 147-pound division, used the added weight to record a unanimous 10-round decision over Marcos Maidana on Saturday night. Alexander, a St. Louis native and former WBC and IBF junior welterweight champion, improved to 23-1. Maidana, who hails from Argentina, fell to 31-3 in his welterweight debut.

The 25-year-old Alexander dominated the non-title bout, capturing nine of 10 rounds on two judges' cards. He finished with advantages of 100-90 100-90, 99-91.

Alexander, a 2-1 favorite, recorded a second straight win after his lone loss - a 10-round setback against Timothy Bradley on Jan. 29, 2011, that cost Alexander his belts.

Alexander outpunched Maidana 168-93 and held a 149-85 advantage in power blows. He used a series of combinations to back Maidana into the ropes in the sixth round.

Maidana felt the added weight hurt his chances.

In the co-feature, Adrien Broner retained his WBO junior lightweight title with a fourth-round knockout of Eloy Perez. Broner, from Cincinnati, improved to 23-0 with his 19th KO. Perez, 23-1-2, is from Salinas, Calif. Broner used a pair of rights to knock Perez on the canvas. Perez staggered to his feet but immediately fell again at the 2:24 mark.

Broner connected on more punches, 58-26.

Boxing Betting Lines: Against all common sense that isn't to do with money, Marcos Maidana has accepted the reality that his February 25 HBO fight against Devon Alexander will have to take place in St. Louis, where Alexander has been on the hometown end of friendly scoring in fights against Andriy Kotelnik and Lucas Matthysse. The show will take place at the Scottrade Center.

Boxing Betting Online: Missouri Boxing gets Marcos Maidana ( 31-2, 28 KOs ) vs Devon Alexander ( 22-1, 13 KOs ) in a 12 round Junior Welterweight fight that should be tough.

Alexander is really fast, and that speed will prove impossible over time for Mama Maidana. Marcos simply doesn’t have the skill set or drive to keep up with Devon.

The M Man hasn’t looked great at all this year, and he is getting worse it looks like. He likes a slow pace when he fights, and I don’t see Alexander letting that kind of pace stand up.

Maidana ( 31-2, 28 KO ) and Alexander ( 22-1, 13 KO ) may both be moving on up to the welterweight division after serving as top contenders and titlists at 140 pounds for the last few years.

Maidana looked terrible when he lost to Khan as Khan did exactly what Alexander will be working on him with. The thing is I think Alexander may even be faster, so this could be ugly early and often.

He has actually been so horrible in at least 3 of his last 4 fights that I don’t see how Alexander could ever be that much of a lay down guy. This fight is going to be as bad or maybe worse than he was against Corley, Morales and Khan. He ran out of juice and had nothing left to squeeze. Expect the same here probably.

Maidana does have one advantage and that is in the power department. That is so slight it won’t even matter here. Say goodnight to the bad Maidana ( not Madonna ) here.
