Marquette plays in the ultra-competitive Big East, so the team finished the regular season with only a 20-14 overall record and .500 in 18 games in the conference. However, the strength of schedule was enough to comfortably get the team into March Madness, and the Eagles performed well once they got there. They defeated Xavier in the first round and then upset Syracuse in the second before losing to the Tar Heels. Marquette is hoping it can do at least that well again this season, and seems to have the right players to do it.

The Golden Eagles return three starters from last year, including leading scorer Darius Johnson-Odom, who averaged 15.8 points and 3.0 rebounds last year. He was a second-team All-Big East selection a year ago, and is the second-highest returning leading scorer coming back after Pittsburgh's Ashton Gibbs. Jae Crowder is also back after averaging 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds last year. Those two are finding themselves on various preseason watch lists, and are expected to be the leaders of the team. The toughest player to replace will be Jimmy Butler. He led the team in minutes played last season, scoring 15.7 points per contest with 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest. The third returning starter is Chris Otule, who averaged 5.1 points and 1.5 block per game last year. Forward Juan Anderson is an incoming freshman that could have an immediate impact if he adjusts to the college game well.

Marquette is going to be in for another battle as the Big East looks to have some very good teams once again. With Johnson-Odom and Crowder leading the way, the Golden Eagles should be in the mix. The team struggled on the road last season, and will look to rectify that this season. Marquette proved its worth in last year's NCAA Tournament, and wants to have another strong season in NCAA basketball gambling.
