Rival head coach John Calipari of in-state heavyweight Kentucky, stated in an impromptu interview that his Wildcats were the only big program to follow in the state. Surely, he simply forgot to mention the Louisville Cardinals, an innocent mistake for a coach who has not been in Lexington for very long. I cannot imagine Calipari saying such a thing deliberately, though it seems a tough team to forget.

When mistakenly omitting a program as prominent as Louisville from your list of quality teams in Kentucky, one with such a solid fan base, one should probably keep in mind the history of that team’s head coach and leader.  Rick Pitino, for Calipari’s information, once took his own Kentucky Wildcats to a National Championship win, a feat the current coach has never done with any team. Pitino, of all people, knows the importance of Kentucky basketball in the state. However, with a squad full of talent, especially in the backcourt led by Peyton Siva, the Cardinals will be looking to upstage Calipari and company this season.

The non-conference schedule is nothing special for Louisville this year, though with the brutal Big East lineup they must face year in and year out, it is hard to blame Pitino for handing the Cardinals softer early-season match ups. A highlight comes in a road game against back-to-back Final Four team Butler, though with the loss of Matt Howard, the Bulldogs will be trying to find a way to rebuild. A home game against Vanderbilt will also be a good test for a team stacked with talent, and a perfect reason for college basketball wagering.
