NBA Betting Online: The Toronto Raptors entered the NBA as an expansion team in 1995. The team currently plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
Toronto along with the Vancouver Grizzlies, were part of the NBA's re-expansion into Canada, becoming the first teams north of the American border since the 1946 Toronto Huskies. After Vancouver moved to Memphis, the Raptors became the only Canadian team in the NBA.
As a young franchise, the Raptors have no championships and just one division title, which came during the 2006-07 season. Toronto plays its home games at Air Canada Centre.
The Raptors history simply started off on the wrong foot. After selecting B.J. Armstrong as the top pick in the 1995 expansion draft, Armstrong refused to play for Toronto so they traded him to the Golden State Warriors. Armstrong's career fizzled out anyway so it wasn't too great of a loss.
The Raps took Damon Stoudamire as the seventh overall pick in the NBA Draft that season, which didn't go over well with the fans. But Stoudamire proved the naysayers wrong, averaging 19.0 points and 9.3 assists per game in his first season while capturing Rookie of the Year honors.
Toronto won its inaugural game over the New Jersey Nets by a score of 94-79. But the entire season wasn't as successful as the Raptors finished at 21-61. They did somehow miraculously manage to beat the 72-10 Bulls that year.
The 1998 Draft will always be remembered as a turning point in Raptors history. Team brass swapped their fourth overall pick, Antawn Jamison, for Golden State's fifth overall pick, Vince Carter.
Carter was a high-flying, electrifying guard out of North Carolina. He took the league by storm and Toronto set NBA attendance records in 2000, 2001 and 2002. With role players like Charles Oakley and Tracy McGrady, the team advanced to the playoffs those three seasons as well.
But the Raptors only won a single postseason series in three trips. McGrady was shipped to Orlando and Carter left in 2004. Power forward Chris Bosh became the face of the franchise but even his talents couldn't keep Toronto out of a period of futility from 2002 to 2006. In 2003, the team tied an NBA record for fewest points in a game with 56.
Sam Mitchell and Bryan Colangelo took over as head coach and general manager before the 2006-07 campaign. With guys like Bosh, Andrea Bargnani, T.J. Ford and Anthony Parker, the Raptors made it back to the postseason after winning the division. Mitchell and Colangelo were honored as Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year, but Toronto fell in the first round to New Jersey.
Bosh walked away from Canada as a free agent before the 2010-11 season. He joined LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami as this generation's "Big Three."
The Raptors current roster is comprised of talented players such as Bargnani, DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson, Sonny Weems, Jerryd Bayless, Ed Davis and Reggie Evans. Dwane Casey will make his coaching debut as the new head man in Toronto starting in 2011-12.
