NBA Betting Online: The Philadelphia 76ers were founded in 1939 and joined the National Basketball Association a decade later.
The 76ers currently reside in the Atlantic Division of the NBA's Eastern Conference. They are one of the league's oldest franchises, and there name derives from the year 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. The team is often called the Sixers.
Philadelphia has captured three NBA championships, five conference crowns and 11 division titles. The Sixers play home games at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 76ers won their first championship as the Syracuse Nationals in 1955. But in 1963 paper magnate Irv Kosloff purchased the Nats and moved them to Philly. He appointed Dolph Chayes head coach and he would hold that position, as well as player, for four years.
Chayes and Kosloff engineered one of the biggest trades in the history of 76ers basketball. They acquired Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain, who was a Philadelphia native, from the Warriors during the 1964-65 season.
In 1966, the Sixers jumped out to a 46-4 record and finished the season at 68-13 under head coach Alex Hannum. Chamberlain led the franchise to its second title at the end of that campaign, after ousting the Warriors in six games.
But just one year later the team brass made a head-scratching move, shipping Chamberlain to the Los Angeles Lakers for Archie Clark, Darrell Imhoff and Jerry Chambers.
The Sixers never advanced past the second round of the playoffs the following three seasons. The next year they failed to qualify for the postseason for the first team in team history. And then the next year Philly won just nine games, which still stands as the NBA record for the lowest win total in an 82-game season.
Philadelphia resurrected itself from the cellar by trading for Moses Malone and Julius Erving. Those two future Hall of Famers, flanked by guys like Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney, and Bobby Jones, tore through the 1982-83 regular season with 65 wins. They went on to defeat the Knicks, Bucks and Lakers to claim Philly's third and last NBA championship.
After this title, the city of Philadelphia would not collect another sports title for 25 years, when the Phillies won the 2008 World Series. The Sixers have only been back to the NBA Finals once since. Allen Iverson took them in 2001 but they lost to the Lakers in five games.
Iverson pulled the 76ers out of the early and mid 1990s slump. He would don a Sixers jersey for a decade after being selected No. 1 overall out of Georgetown in the 1996 NBA Draft. Iverson, nicknamed "The Answer," won the scoring title four times while in Philly and was named Rookie of the Year in 1996 and MVP in 2001.
And the City of Brotherly Love can't be discussed without mentioning "Sir" Charles Barkley. The comical and controversial Barkley played for the Sixers from 1984 until 1992. He won the MVP award in 1993 while playing for Phoenix.
The current 76ers squad is comprised of quality players such as Elton Brand, Thaddeus Young, Andre Iguodala, Lou Williams, Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner. There isn't really a household name among them, but they each contribute to the team concept in different ways.
Doug Collins took over coaching duties prior to the 2010-11 season and his guidance paid immediate dividends. The team started out 3-13 but after it bought into Collins' philosophy of sharing the ball and playing defense, it went on to win 38 of the final 66 games. The Sixers lost in the first round of the NBA Playoffs to Miami, but the future is sunny in Philadelphia.
