NBA Betting Online: The New York Knicks were a founding member of the Basketball Association of America in 1946 and joined the NBA following the merger three years later.

Most people are unaware of this fact, but the Knicks official name is actually the Knickerbockers. The nickname was shortened for easier use in newspaper headlines. New York is one of only two teams of the original NBA still located in its origin city, the other being the Boston Celtics.

The Knicks play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They have won two NBA championships, eight conference crowns and four division titles. They call Madison Square Garden in the New York City borough of Manhattan home.

Madison Square Garden, commonly referred to as The Garden or MSG, is arguably the world's most famous arena. Located in the heart of New York City, MSG is the third-grossing music arena in the world in terms of ticket sales. The Garden was opened in 1968 and is the oldest arena in the NHL, and the second oldest in the NBA.

Knicks history immediately started with success. They reached the NBA Finals three straight years starting in 1950 but lost all three occasions, once to the Rochester Royals and twice to the Minneapolis Lakers.

After a period of mediocrity, Red Holzman took over as head coach in the late 1960s and led the team back to prominence. With players like Phil Jackson, Walt Frazier, Dick Barnett and Willis Reed, the Knicks went 60-22 during the 1969-70 campaign. They squared off against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals, which would spawn one of the most heroic performances in NBA history.

Team captain Willis Reed tore a muscle in his right leg in Game 5 and missed all of the following game. But he emerged from the locker room in Game 7 and miraculously scored the first two buckets of the contest. Reed's guile ignited the team and New York would go on to win its first basketball championship.

Jerry Lucas and Earl "The Pearl" Monroe joined the Knicks in 1972 and they made it back to the Finals but lost to L.A. this time. The following season the two teams met again but this time, New York claim its second title in three years.

Patrick Ewing became the face of the franchise from 1985 to 2000. In his first season, Ewing earned Rookie of the Year honors after leading all first-year players in scoring and rebounding. But it wasn't until Pat Riley took over as head coach in 1991 did Knicks start making noise again.

Riley, who coached the Lakers to four NBA titles during the 1980s, demanded a defensive, physical style of play in New York. The Knicks won the Atlantic Division the next three years but Chicago proved to be too much to overcome in the playoffs. When they finally did advance to the Finals in 1994, the Rockets knocked them off in seven games.

An iconic moment in Knicks history is hard to swallow for die-hard fans. Playing the Pacers in the second round of the 1995 Playoffs, Reggie Miller amazingly scored eight points in the final eight seconds of Game 1 to give Indiana a 107-105 victory. The Pacers went on to win the series in seven games and Riley resigned the next day.

In the past decade, the Knicks have only made the playoffs twice but there is plenty of hope in the Big Apple heading into the 2011-12 season.

New York sent a bevy of potential stars to Denver in exchange for Carmelo Anthony shortly after the 2011 All-Star Break. Players like Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, Wilson Chandler and Kosta Koufos were all dealt.

Mike D'Antoni enters his third year with the club in 2012 and is now armed with offensive talents such as Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. D'Antoni operates a fast-paced, high-shot offense and these players are two of the most athletic at their respective positions.
