NBA Betting Online: The Dallas Mavericks were established as an organization in 1980. They currently reside in the Southwest Division of the NBA's Western Conference.
The Mavericks, often called the Mavs by fans and media, have won one NBA championship, two conference crowns and three division titles. They play home games at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Dick Motta, a well-respected teacher in the league with a disciplinarian approach, was hired as the franchise's first head coach. He would guide the Mavericks through the 1980s where they were highly competitive.
With a roster featuring players like Mark Aguirre, Brad Davis, Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper, Sam Perkins and Detlef Schrempf, Dallas earned playoff berths six times in seven seasons from 1983 to 1990. The Mavs advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 1988 but a long period of despair soon followed.
The Mavericks never went back to the postseason from 1991 to 2000. They went 11-71 during the 1992-93 campaign and 13-69 the following year. The only flash of optimism came in the mid 1990s when the "Triple J" trio of Jason Kidd, Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn were on the team. But even those players couldn't get Dallas into the playoffs.
Everything changed when internet billionaire Mark Cuban purchased the franchise in 2000 from Ross Perot, Jr. for $285 million. Cuban was an owner dedicated to winning and had an unlimited budget. He was also a blue-collar, fan-friendly owner, always stationed courtside by his team while wearing t-shirts and blue jeans.
In the 20 years before Cuban bought the team, the Mavs had a winning percentage of 40 percent. In the following 11 years under Cuban's ownership, Dallas has won 69 percent of its games, never finished with fewer than 50 wins and advanced to the playoffs every season.
With players like Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Steve Nash, the Mavericks returned to prominence in the early 2000s. But under head coach Don Nelson they didn't play much defense and that would perennially be there undoing during the playoffs.
Nash would sign with the Suns in 2004 and Finley was released so Nowitzki became the face of the franchise. Dallas would advance to its first NBA Finals in 2006 against the Miami Heat. That series is considered by many to have been fixed by the league and Commissioner David Stern.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 series lead and were poised to take Game 3, but the NBA wasn't about to see its newest posterboy, Dwyane Wade, go down three games to none. The ratings wouldn't be there for the remainder of the series so officials were instructed to call phantom fouls against Dallas.
Wade made more trips to the free throw line than any player in Finals history. In Game 5 alone, he shot the same number of free throws (25) as the entire Mavericks team.
Tim Donaghy even confirmed the NBA conspiracy against Dallas in his tell-all book: "The message was predictable and very clear: Miami was going to have an advantage in its own building thus prolonging the series and socking it to Mark Cuban."
It was an unfortunate revelation for Dallas fans. But they, and the Mavericks, exacted revenge during the 2010-11 season.
With Jason Kidd back in the fold, along with a deep cast of players including Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea, head coach Rick Carlisle and Nowitzki led the Mavs to a 57-win campaign.
In the playoffs, Dallas moved past the Portland Trail Blazers in Round 1 and then swept the two-time defending champion Lakers in the semis. The Mavs defeated Oklahoma City in five games during the West finals which set up a Finals rematch with the Miami Heat.
This version of the Heat featured the new "Big Three" of LeBron James, Wade and Chris Bosh. Miami was a 3 to 1 favorite entering the series but the underdogs pulled off the upset, winning the Finals four games to two. The more talented and complete team emerged victorious, and justice was served by the basketball gods.
