NBA Betting Online: The Boston Celtics were established in 1946 as a member of the Basketball Association of America. The franchise entered the National Basketball Association after the 1949 merger.

The Celtics compete in the Atlantic Division of the NBA's Eastern Conference. As one of the most storied franchises in the history of basketball, Boston has won a league-record 17 championships, 21 conference titles and 20 division crowns.

The Celtics are currently owned by Boston Basketball Partners LLC. The team is run by general manager Danny Ainge and head coach Doc Rivers, both of whom are former Celtic players.

Boston plays its home games at TD Garden. Additional tenants of the 20,000-seat venue are the Boston Bruins and Boston Blazers.

The Celtics rich history began by making history in 1950. That season, Boston became the first franchise to draft an African American player by signing Chuck Cooper.

Cooper was selected by one of the greatest coaches to ever grace an NBA floor -- Red Auerbach. The stogie-smoking Auerbach controlled all aspects of operations for the Celtics during his early years, everything from running practices to organizing road trips to scouting prospects.

The Celtics' prominence began in 1950 when Bob Cousy was acquired from the defunct Chicago Stags. Auerbach then coupled the point guard with University of San Francisco center Bill Russell in the 1957. That year, Auerbach, Russell and Cousy would lead Boston to its first of 17 NBA titles.

From 1957 to 1969, the Celtics defined the word dynasty. They won the NBA championship 11 times in 13 years, including eight straight from 1959 to 1966. The period of this franchise is widely considered the most dominating in the history of sports.

After a few stints of mediocrity during the 1970s, the Larry Bird era began in 1979. In his first season, Bird helped Boston improve its record from the previous year by 32 games. The C's lost in the East Finals to Philadelphia but Bird won Rookie of the Year honors.

Bird would later be joined by Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, which forged basketball's first "Big Three." This trio of stars went on to capture the 1981, 1984 and 1986 championships.

The 1985-86 squad is considered one of the best in league history, only rivaled by the 1995 Chicago Bulls. That year, the Celtics went 67-15 including an insane 40-1 record at Boston Garden. Bird claimed his third straight Most Valuable Player award and the franchise won its 16th title.

Tragedy struck Boston prior to Bird retiring in 1992. The team selected Len Bias with the second overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft but he died of a drug overdose just two days after. In 1993, the Celtics suffered another loss when star player Reggie Lewis died of a heart attack on the court.

The formation of the second "Big Three" returned Boston to prominence during the 2007-08 campaign. Perennial All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined longtime Celtic Paul Pierce and the team completed the largest single-season turnaround in NBA history after going 24-58 the year before. Led by Rivers, the Celtics took home their 17th Larry O'Brien Trophy in 2008.

The following year, Boston jumped out with the best starting record in league history at 27-2. But injuries would thwart the Celtics from advancing past the Eastern Conference championship. In 2010, the C's met Los Angeles again in the Finals but lost in seven games this time.

The Celtics-Lakers rivalry is recognized as one of the greatest in all of sports. The two iconic franchises have met 12 times in the NBA Finals. Boston has the edge in the Finals, winning nine times compared to L.A.'s three. With 33 titles between them, the Lakers and Celtics have combined to win more than half of the NBA's 64 championships.
