NBA Betting Online: The Atlanta Hawks franchise was established in 1946. They currently compete in Southeast Division of the NBA's Eastern Conference.

The Hawks have claimed one NBA championship, four conference titles and three division crowns during their history. They host home games at Philips Arena in downtown Atlanta.

Originally founded as the Buffalo Bisons in 1946, the team competed in the National Basketball League. But just 13 games into the season, owner Ben Kerner moved the club to Illinois where it became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks were one of the NBA's 17 original members after the NBL and Basketball Association of America merged in 1949. They advanced to the playoffs in their first NBA season under the direction of legendary head coach Red Auerbach.

The franchise relocated again in 1951, this time moving to Milwaukee and shortening the mascot to just the Hawks. The team was there until 1955 when it packed its bags again, this time headed south for St. Louis. It was interesting that the Hawks moved from one beer city to another.

While stationed in Missouri in 1957, the Hawks earned their first trip to the NBA Finals. They lost to the Celtics that year in a double-overtime Game 7. They went back to the Finals the following season and exacted revenge on Boston, winning the series four games to two. Bob Pettit dropped 50 points the game-clincher to give the franchise its first and last championship.

St. Louis remained one of the league's top teams over the next decade. The Hawks went back to the Finals in 1960 and 1961 but lost each time to the dynastic Celtics.

Former Georgia governor Carl Sanders and real estate mogul Tom Cousins purchased the team in 1968 and immediately moved it to Atlanta. For the next handful of years the Hawks were highly competitive for their new fans with the help of players like "Pistol" Pete Maravich and Lou Hudson.

From 1985 to 1989, Atlanta maintained prominence as one of the NBA's elite squads, winning 50 games or more each season. High-flying superstar Dominique Wilkins would dazzle spectators with electrifying jams and fan-favorite Spud Webb defied dunking gravity at just 5-foot-7.

After a few years of mediocrity in the early 1990s, Lenny Wilkens took over as head coach in 1993 and immediately returned the Hawks to elite status. The won 57 games his first season and advanced to the Eastern Conference semis but lost to Indiana. Wilkins, the team's all-time leading scorer, would be traded during the offseason.

The Hawks current roster is comprised of talented players such as Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford and Marvin Williams. They won 47 games in 2008-09, their first winning campaign since 1999.

The 53 wins under head coach Mike Woodson the following year would not be enough to save his job. Quite often, Atlanta's mental approach and motivation for winning games comes under scrutiny. Larry Drew replaced Woodson prior to the 2010-11 season but the same questions arose during the year.

The Hawks trail only Sacramento for the longest drought without an NBA championship. Their streak currently stands at 54 years. Atlanta has never advanced past the second round of the playoffs during the last 44 seasons.
