MLB Betting Online: The Washington Nationals were founded as an expansion club in 1969. The team was actually the first MLB franchise established in Canada and played as the Montreal Expos until 2002. That year the league purchased the team following contraction, and then prior to the 2005 season renamed it the Nationals and moved it to Washington, D.C.
The Nationals played games at RFK Stadium, home of the Washington Redskins, for the first three years of existence. Nationals Park was constructed in Southeast D.C. in 2008 and that is where the team currently plays home games.
The Nats are the second team stationed in the nation’s capitol. The Washington Senators played there until they were moved to Texas and became known as the Rangers in 1972.
The Nationals and the Seattle Mariners are the only two MLB franchises to have never reached the World Series.
The 1981 Expos led by Gary Carter, Tim Raines Andre Dawson, Tim Wallach, Steve Rogers and Bill Gullickson, won the team’s only division championship in a strike-shortened season. They would go on to lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games of the NLDS.
Montreal was having another great year in 1994 with players like Larry Walker, Moisés Alou, Marquis Grissom and Pedro Martínez under the direction of manager Felipe Alou. But the Expos were again affected by a players strike. They held the highest winning percentage in baseball when the season prematurely ended on August 11.
Following the disappointment of the 1994 campaign, Montreal brass started to trade away its marquee names. The team scuffled over the next five years, fans lost interest and the organization folded.
There are subtle signs of hope in Washington D.C. these days. But the Nationals have never finished higher than fourth place in the National League East, and five of their six seasons have ended in last place.
Two young players are expected to resurrect the fledging franchise. Slugger Bryce Harper is a highly-touted minor league prospect that should be called up sometime during the 2012 season.
Stephen Strasburg is a hard-throwing pitching prospect that made his debut for the Nats on June 8, 2010. More than 40,000 people showed up to see Strasburg strike out 14 hitters over 7.0 innings in a win over the Pirates.
But on August 27, the team announced that Strasburg had a torn ulnar collateral ligament that would require Tommy John surgery. He was expected to go through anywhere from 12 to 18 months of rehabilitation. The team doesn’t expect to have him back until the start of the 2012 campaign.
Vladimir Guerrero, a member of the Expos, is the best candidate this franchise has for a Hall of Famer. He holds single season team records for batting average, slugging percentage, hits, total bases and RBIs.
A time-honored tradition the Nationals perform every season is the ceremonial first pitch on opening day in Washington. George W. Bush renewed the tradition in 2005, exactly 95 years after William Howard Taft started it at Griffith Stadium in 1910.
