MLB Baseball Betting Odds: The Toronto Blue Jays were founded as an expansion franchise in 1977. They are located in Ontario, Canada and play in the East Division of the American League. They Jays were just the second team in Major League Baseball to be based outside of the United States. The Montreal Expos were the first but since they relocated to Washington D.C., Toronto is now the only franchise outside the U.S. It is also one of only three clubs under corporate ownership.
The Blue Jays play home games at Rogers Centre, which was originally called the SkyDome. Upon completion in 1989, the SkyDome became the first stadium with a retractable motorized roof. It was also renowned for having a 348-room luxury hotel attached to it with dozens of rooms overlooking the field.
The SkyDome proved to be good luck for Toronto. They Jays enjoyed five successful seasons from 1989 on. In 1991, they finished 20 games over .500 before losing in the ALCS.
The following year, Toronto became the first team outside the United State to win a World Series. Dave Winfield’s two-run double in the 11th inning propelled the Blue Jays to the series victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 6.
The Jays returned to the Fall Classic the next year after finishing nearly 30 games over .500 during the regular season. Armed with All-Stars such as Roberto Alomar, John Olerud, Paul Molitor, Devon White, Joe Carter, Pat Hentgen and Duane Ward, Toronto took down the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to earn their second straight world championship.
Game 6 of that series was one where you might remember where you were watching. Toronto had blown a 5-1 lead by yielding five runs in the 7th inning but then Carter stepped to the plate with two on and one out in the bottom of the ninth. He belted a three-run, walk-off homer off Philly closer Mitch Williams to win the series. It is only the second World Series-clinching walk-off home run in MLB history.
Blue Jays play-by-play announcer went down in broadcasting history with his famous line, “Touch 'em all, Joe, you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life!”
Unfortunately for Jays fans, prolonged futility has followed those celebrated seasons. Toronto has just five East Division titles in team history and the last came in 1993.
Alomar is the only member of the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted as a Blue Jay. He is considered one of the greatest second basemen of all-time. He was a 12-time All-Star selection, a 10-time Gold Glove award winner and a .300 career switch hitter.
