MLB Betting Online: The Texas Rangers joined Major League Baseball in 1961 as an expansion team in Washington D.C. where the club was called the Senators. These Senators were the second MLB team in the nation’s capital after ownership of the original Senators moved the team to Minnesota where it became the Twins. In 1972, the new Senators moved to Arlington, Texas and debuted as the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers are based in Arlington, Texas which is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Since 1994, the Rangers have played at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The team’s nickname originates from the historic law enforcement agency of the Lone Star State.
While based in Washington, the Senators lost an average of 90 games a season. The ongoing futility prompted a joke that said, "Washington: first in war, first in peace and still last in the American League." The team only had two winning seasons in the first 15 years of existence.
After relocating to Texas, manager Ted Williams retired following the first year. He was replaced by Hall of Famers Whitey Herzog and Billy Martin.
Under Martin in 1974, the Rangers finished second in the American League with an 84-76 record. Martin was named Manager of the Year, Mike Hargrove won Rookie of the Year and Jeff Burroughs won the AL MVP award. That squad is still the only team in MLB history to finish with a .500 record or better after two straight 100-loss seasons.
The Rangers were affected by strike-shortened season not once, but twice. The first occurrence came in 1981 when they lost their last game before the strike began and as a result lost to Oakland by a half game in the AL West.
Bobby Valentine took the managerial reins in 1985 and served as head man for the next 1,186 games. With young studs such as Rubén Sierra, Pete Incaviglia, Mitch Williams, Bobby Witt, and Edwin Correa, Texas finished in second place with an 87-75 record in 1986.
In 1989, the Rangers signed Nolan Ryan at 41 years of age. He was a Texas native and wanted to play for the Rangers after spending multiple seasons in Houston. While with the Rangers, Ryan recorded milestones of 5,000 strikeouts, 300 wins and his seventh no-hitters.
The Rangers finally broke through and won division titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999. They might have had won two years earlier had the players strike not ended the 1994 season prematurely. Texas was leading the West when the season was cancelled by Bud Selig in August.
The late 1990s lineups consisted of hitters Iván Rodríguez, Will Clark, Mark McLemore, Dean Palmer, Rusty Greer, Juan González, and Mickey Tettleton. But pitching was perennially the problem. Texas’ offense could compete with anyone but the staff simply gave up too many runs.
In 2010, the Rangers advanced past the Division Series for the first time in franchise history. They defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS and New York Yankees in the ALCS with hitters Josh Hamilton, Michael Young, Nelson Cruz, Elvis Andrus, Ian Kinsler and newly-acquired pitcher Cliff Lee.
Lee struggled in the World Series, however, losing both of his starts against the San Francisco Giants. Texas was beaten in five games in its first World Series appearance.
Ryan is now the team president of the Rangers. He has instilled a workhorse attitude among the pitchers and manager Ron Washington is correcting defensive flaws. Texas should be a favorite to win the World Series for years to come.
