MLB Betting Online: The Seattle Mariners entered Major League Baseball as an expansion franchise in 1977. The Mariners are one of three MLB teams (Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays) owned by a corporation. Nintendo of America serves as the ownership group for Seattle.
After King County built the multi-purpose Kingdome in 1976, the NFL expanded the Seattle Seahawks and the Mariners followed suit a year later. The M’s played there until July of 1999 when Safeco Field was opened.
The team’s nickname comes from the prominence of maritime culture in the city of Seattle. The M’s play in the West Division of the American League.
The Mariners were largely futile for the first 15 years of their existence. They did not record a winning season until 1991 and they didn’t win their first division title until 1995.
Lou Piniella turned the franchise around. He managed the team from 1993 through 2002 and won a pair of AL Manager of the Year Awards during his tenure. "Sweet" Lou is still beloved by Seattle fans.
The most successful season in Seattle history came in 2001. That year, the Mariners set an AL record with 116 wins and tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the most wins in a single season. But they failed to reach the World Series after losing to New York in five games in the ALCS.
The historic campaign marked Ichiro Suzuki’s first year with the club. In 157 games, he hit .350 with 242 hits and 56 stolen bases. Ichiro also had eight outfield assists. He was given the AL MVP, AL Rookie of the Year and Gold Glove award, becoming the first player to win all three in the same year since Fred Lynn in 1985.
In 2005, the M’s signed Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson to large, lengthy contracts. But neither hitter produced as expected, and Safeco has become known as a pitcher’s ballpark.
Seattle tried to make another free agent run during the 2009 offseason by trading for Cy Young winner Cliff Lee. The team also brought in Chone Figgins and Jack Wilson via free agency.
Lee was traded to the Rangers prior to the All-Star break and the two position players struggled mightily. Félix Hernández wound up winning the Cy Young award that year but the Mariners finished last in the AL West with a 61-101 record.
Two players will likely enter the Hall of Fame as Seattle Mariners when eligible.
Ken Griffey Jr. announced his retirement on June 2, 2010 after 22 seasons in the big leagues. He played for the Mariners for the first decade of his career and then again from 2009 until retirement. With one of the sweetest left-handed swing the game has ever seen, Griffey hit 630 home runs in his MLB career.
Randy Johnson was a Mariner from 1989 to 1998. The "Big Unit" pitched a no-hitter in 1990 with the team and won the Cy Young in 1995.
Seattle is one of only two MLB franchises to never have reached the World Series. After a 17-game losing streak in the middle of the 2011 campaign, it doesn’t appear that streak will be broken any time soon.
