MLB baseball Betting Online: The Padres were formed in 1969. They, along with the Angels, are the only two teams to originate in California. The team joined the league as an expansion team along with the Montreal Expos, the Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Pilots. The start was not easy for San Diego. The team finished in last place in each of its first six years of existence, losing more than 100 games four times. The Padres were nearly moved to Washington, D.C. in 1974, but McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc bought the team and kept them in San Diego.

The team continued to struggle in the 1970s, but they did feature premier slugger Dave Winfield, who starred for the team from 1974-80 before he joined the Yankees. The 1978 season was the team’s best of the decade as they finished 84-78. However, the record dropped to 68-93 the next season, ending a decade of futility. The team won its first pennant in 1984, finishing the season 92-70 and defeating the Cubs in five games to advance to the World Series. However, San Diego lost to the Detroit Tigers in four games to one. The team couldn’t repeat the feat again in the 1980s, despite having Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn in the middle of the lineup.

In 1996, the team made the playoffs behind Gwynn, Rickey Henderson and Ken Caminiti. However, the Padres were defeated in the National League Division Series by the St. Louis Cardinals. The team made it back in 1998 after 98-64, the best record in team history. San Diego defeated the Houston Astros in the first round and the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. It was the team’s second and final berth in the World Series, but they lost to the Yankees in four straight games. San Diego won division title in 2005 and 2006 but were eliminated before the World Series. The team had a surprisingly good run in 2010 before falling just short of the postseason, but with a limited offense, fell toward the bottom of the National League standings in 2011.
