MLB Betting Online: The Philadelphia Phillies are the oldest continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in American professional sports history, having been established in 1883. Because baseball plays the lengthiest schedule among major sports, the Phillies hold the dubious distinction of having lost the most games of any team in professional sports. The franchise lost its 10,000th game in 2007.
Philadelphia competes in the NL East Division and plays home games at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies have won 10 division titles, seven National League pennants and two World Series.
In 1915 the Phils made their first World Series appearance, but fell into oblivion shortly thereafter because of financial troubles. From 1918 to 1948, they only had one winning season.
In 1943, lumber mogul William B. Cox bought the club and immediately resurrected it from the bottom of the standings. Cox was ahead of his time as far as general managing tactics, electing to build the team with young players in the farm system.
Future Hall of Famers Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts created a lineup of young players that became known as the "Whiz Kids." On the final day of the 1950 season, Dick Sisler delivered a home run that won the pennant for Philadelphia.
But soon after the "Kids" aged into veterans, the Phils would experience another period of futility. In 1961 they lost 23 games in a row, which still stands as the record during the World Series era. After they finally broke the slump, the Phillies were 40 games out of first place.
Philadelphia looked poised to return as pennant winners in 1964 but a late-season collapse prevented it from happening. The Phils held a 6.5-game lead with two weeks remaining in the season but went on to lose 10 games in a row. St. Louis won the NL title by just one game. Die-hard fans still refer to that season as the "Phold of '64."
All-Star players such as Steve Carlton, Greg Luzinski, Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa and Pete Rose helped Philly win the division in 1980. While facing the Astros in the NLCS, four games went into extra innings. The Phillies ultimately prevailed with a tenth-inning, walk-off hit by center fielder Garry Maddox in Game 5.
Philadelphia would go on to defeat the Kansas City Royals in six games during the 1980 World Series. Schmidt was named the series MVP after hitting .381 and coming up with a pair of game-winning hits. He was also honored as the National League MVP that season.
An infusion of young players like Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Cole Hamels helped the Phillies reach the NLDS in 2007, but they were defeated by the Colorado Rockies.
The next season Philly would capture its second World Series title in its 126-year history. The Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games.
They went back to the Fall Classic in 2009 but lost to the New York Yankees. After acquiring pitcher Roy Halladay, the Phillies reached the NLCS for the third straight year the following season but were defeated by the eventual-champion Giants.
The 2011 Phillies starting rotation was considered one of the greatest in the history of the game. Cliff Lee turned down a bigger offseason contract from the Yankees to join Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Hamels in the starting rotation.
With stellar pitching and a strong nucleus of young hitters, Philadelphia is expected to compete for many more rings in the years to come.
