MLB Betting Online: The Oakland Athletics were established as one of the original eight charter members of the American League in 1901. At that time, the team was located in Pennsylvania and called the Philadelphia Athletics. The franchise as a whole has won nine World Series, 15 American League pennants, 14 division titles and one Wild Card berth.
The team moniker stems from the "athletic clubs" of the late 19th century. The Athletics are also known as the A’s or the "White Elephants."
The less-used nickname originated when New York Giants manager John McGraw told the media that A’s owner Benjamin Shibe had a "white elephant on his hands." Philly’s head man, Connie Mack, defiantly embraced the name and made the elephant the team mascot. Mack even gave McGraw a stuffed toy elephant prior to the 1905 World Series.
The Hall of Famer Mack managed the Athletics for the first 50 years of their existence. With future Hall of Fame players like Chief Bender, Frank Baker, Jimmie Foxx and Lefty Grove, the Philadelphia A’s won three of four World Series from 1910 to 1914. They regrouped and came back to win championships in 1929 and 1930.
After 20 years of futility, the buzz in Philly died and the team moved to Kansas City in 1955. The Kansas City A’s didn’t amount to much and 13 seasons later the club moved again, this time to its permanent home in Oakland.
Four years after arriving in the Bay Area, the Athletics won three consecutive World Series from 1972 to 1974. More Hall-of-Fame players powered this dynasty, including Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter.
The A’s "Fourth Dynasty" wasn’t far behind. With the "Bash Brothers" of Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco and pitcher Dennis Eckersley, Oakland won its ninth World Series title in 1989.
The A’s haven’t been back to the Fall Classic since 1990. In recent years, they have become more famous for General Manager Billy Beane’s approach to building a team rather than winning. Beane was the first GM to use "sabermetrics" when constructing a lineup. He put an emphasis on stats most managers ignored and attained maximum value from limited funds.
But most Oakland fans have grown weary of perennially rebuilding. Beane has traded away All-Star players such as Dan Haren and Carlos Gonzalez in recent years. Although a movie is set to be released in the summer of 2011, depicting the life of Beane and his "Moneyball" approach, the GM may be standing on his last leg in Oakland.
The A’s have played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, which was recently renamed the O.co Coliseum, since 1968. They are the only team other than the Florida Marlins to share a stadium with an NFL franchise. The Oakland Raiders also play at the Coliseum.
Poor attendance has prompted the team to cover upper sections of the stadium with tarps. When covered, the Athletics game capacity is 34,077, making the Coliseum the smallest stadium in Major League Baseball.
