New York Mets Betting OddsMLB Betting Online: After the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants left the Big Apple in 1957, the U.S.’s largest city was left without a National League representative. Concerned that another pro baseball league would open a franchise in New York City, the league quickly scrambled to assemble the Mets as an expansion franchise in 1962. The team is located in the borough of the Queens district.

The Mets adopted its primary colors as the blue of the Dodgers and the orange of the Giants, which both originated from colors on the New York City flag. The team name comes from the original 19th century New York Metropolitans baseball club.

New York played its home games at Shea Stadium until 2008. Prior to the 2009 season, the Mets moved into a new ballpark called Citi Field, which sits adjacent to where Shea was located.

The Mets have won five NL East titles, four league pennants and two World Series. They have also qualified for the playoffs twice as a Wild Card team. Their two championships are tied for the most among expansion teams and their four World Series appearances are the most.

In the 49-year history of the Mets, no pitcher has ever thrown a no-hitter. New York and San Diego are the only MLB clubs to hold this dubious distinction. Former Mets pitchers such as Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden, David Cone and Nolan Ryan all threw no-hitters with other teams.

The 1962 Mets posted one of the worst records in MLB history, closing the season at 40–120. In 1966, they notoriously passed on Reggie Jackson in the amateur draft to select Steve Chilcott, who never played in the big leagues.

But the following season the Mets got their savior in Seaver. The future Hall of Famer led the "Miracle Mets" to a World Series victory over the heavily-favored Baltimore Orioles in 1969.

The Mets won the division again in 1973 despite finishing just three games over .500. They knocked off another powerhouse after defeating the Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine" in the NLCS. They took the defending World Series champion Oakland Athletics to seven games in the Fall Classic but ultimately came up short.

When Gary Carter was acquired in a trade from the Expos in 1985, the Mets won 98 games but didn’t even reach the postseason. The next season they went 98-64 and earned their third trip to the World Series.

New York came within one strike from losing to the Boston Red Sox in that World Series. The NBC telecast had already named the series MVP and a message appeared on the Shea Stadium scoreboard congratulating Boston as world champions.

But then the Curse of the Bambino struck again. Following three straight singles, Mookie Wilson hit a slow ground ball to first base that looked like the game-ending out, but the ball went between Bill Buckner’s legs and the Mets scored two runs to win the game.

New York went on to win Game 7 by a score of 8-5 and capture their second World Series crown.

The Mets made it back to the Fall Classic in 2000 but fell to the Yankees in five games during the "Subway Series".

In 2007, New York was up 7.5 games in the East with 17 to play in the season. The Mets ended up losing 12 of those 17 contests and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Along with the Phillies’ "Phold of '64", this is considered one of the biggest collapses in sports history.

Talented players such as David Wright, Jose Reyes and Johan Santana remain in New York but the Mets have fallen on tough times in the ultra-competitive NL East.
