MLB baseball Betting Online: The Minnesota Twins were founded as a franchise in 1894 and entered into the American League in 1901 as one of the original eight members.
From 1901 to 1960 the team was based in Washington, D.C., and called the Senators. That final year, Major League Baseball granted the city of Minneapolis an expansion team but Washington owner Calvin Griffith wanted to move his team to Minnesota instead. So the nation’s capital got the expansion team and they kept the Senators name until moving to Texas and becoming the Rangers in 1972.
The Twins moniker is derived from the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The team’s cap has a "TC" emblazoned on it. A common nickname for the team is the Twinkies.
Minnesota played in Metropolitan Stadium from 1961 to 1981 before moving to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in 1982. The Twins and Vikings shared the Metrodome until 2010 when Target Field was opened. Target Field is an outdoor, natural turf park in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis. Without a dome, the Twins are constantly battling weather elements and home run totals are down.
The Twins have won three World Series championships (1924, 1987, 1991). Members of the Hall of Fame wearing a Minnesota cap include Bert Blyleven, Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew and Kirby Puckett.
Killebrew, Bob Allison and Carew led Minnesota to a 1965 AL pennant after winning 102 regular season games. The Twins were defeated in seven games by Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers in the World Series that year.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Minnesota was perennially one of the best teams on the Junior Circuit. Players like Puckett, Blyleven, Kent Hrbek, Frank Viola, Jack Morris and Jeff Reardon provided the club with All-Star support. Under the tutelage of manager Tom Kelly, the Twins defeated the Cardinals in the 1987 World Series and the Braves in the 1991 Fall Classic.
The Twinkies then fell on tough times, stringing together eight losing season from 1993 to 1999. Prior to the 2002 campaign, MLB contraction threatened their existence. Minnesota, along with the Montreal Expos, was nearly wiped off the baseball map because it wasn’t pulling in as much money as other franchises.
But after a court order held up that the Twins had to play out their lease at the Metrodome, the team remained alive. And it’s a good thing because that year they reached the ALCS where they lost to the eventual World Series champion Angels. The Cinderella story was good for the game of baseball.
The Twins are highly competitive in the AL Central Division. They feature two of the game’s best hitters in first baseman Justin Morneau and catcher Joe Mauer. Ron Gardenhire is a high-caliber manager with a small-ball philosophy that gets the most out of minimal talent.
