Los Angeles Angels Betting OddsMLB Betting Online: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were founded in 1961 and play in the West Division of the American League. The Angels name derives from the nickname of Los Angeles, known as the "City of Angels." But the team has undergone multiple name changes outside of its mascot.

They were the Los Angeles Angels until 1965 when the name changed to the California Angels. They did this because they were about to move into the newly constructed Anaheim Stadium at the start of the 1966 season, so they would no longer be based in L.A.

For 31 of the next 46 years they retained the California Angels moniker. When the Walt Disney Company bought the team in 1997 it renovated Anaheim Stadium. The City of Anaheim put up $30 million of the $118-million renovation and negotiated terms that the team would have the word "Anaheim" somewhere in it. So at that point, the franchise became known as the Anaheim Angels.

But when Arthur Moreno purchased the team in 2005, he was adamant about adding "Los Angeles" to the name in hopes of tapping into the huge L.A. market. The team was again renamed, this time the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

It’s a mouthful to say and most of the media refers to the team simply as the Angels or the Halos.

Deceased actor, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur Gene Autry was the original owner of the Angels. During his ownership tenure, the team advanced to the playoffs just three times and never won the pennant. The Angels went 70-91 in their first year of the existence, which still stands as the highest winning percentage ever for a first-year expansion team.

Nolan Ryan was the focal point of the team during the 1970s. He pitched four no-hitters while playing for the Angels and also set the all-time record for strikeouts in a single season with 383.

Manager Jim Fregosi, armed with Ryan, Frank Tanana, Don Baylor, Bert Campaneris, Rod Carew, Dan Ford and Bobby Grich, took the Angels to their first division title in 1979.

The Angels won the West again in 1986 and came within one strike of reaching the World Series. Holding a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning, Mike Witt gave up a two-run blast to the Red Sox cleanup hitter Don Baylor. Closer Donnie Moore entered the game and proceeded to give up another two-run homer to Dave Henderson.

The Angels tied the game in the bottom half of the ninth but eventually lost in the 11th inning. They went on to get blown out back in Boston in Game 6 and Game 7.

But the city of Anaheim got its first pennant and championship less than 20 years later. With a rag-tag group of players, manager Mike Scioscia led the Angels to the World Series where they defeated the San Francisco Giants in six games.

The Angels have since made the playoffs in four of the six years of Moreno's ownership, but have never returned to the World Series. Scioscia is still regarded as one of the keenest minds in all of baseball as he continually builds winners with minimal talent. He is the Tony La Russa of the American League.
