Detroit Tigers Betting OddsMLB baseball Betting Online: The Detroit Tigers were founded in 1894 and established as a charter member of the American League in 1901.

The Tigers are one of just four franchises (Red Sox, White Sox, Indians) to still be located in their original city. This is an amazing feat considering the economic pitfalls Detroit has endured associated with the motor industry.

No one is really sure how the Tigers got their name. The players originally wore orange stirrups over their black socks so that is one theory. Writer Richard Bak claims the name came from the Detroit Light Guard military unit, who were known as "The Tigers." Common nicknames for the Tigers are the Tigs and La Tigras.

Detroit played at Tiger Stadium from 1912 until 2000. A downtown field was constructed that year and the franchise revealed Comerica Park, where the Tigers currently play home games.

Detroit has four World Series banners hanging from the walls at Comerica from championships in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984. The team has won the AL pennant 10 times but never won the AL Central since it became a division in 1994.

With more than a century of history, the Tigers have seen their share of legends come through Detroit. Members of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown wearing a Tigers cap include Ty Cobb, Mickey Cochrane, Sam Crawford, Hank Greenberg and Al Kaline.

Cobb carried the team for nearly two decades. He is considered one of the greatest, and ruthless, players of all time. Rumor has it that Cobb would intentionally slide into second spikes first to try and injure the infielder attempting to turn a double play.

In 1915, Cobb, Sam Crawford, and Bobby Veach finished first, second and third in runs batted in and total bases. Cobb stole 96 bags that season and that record stood until 1962.

But it wasn’t until Greenberg, Cochrane, Goose Goslin and Charlie Gehringer showed up in 1935 did the Tigers achieve their first championship. They defeated the Chicago Cubs in six games of the World Series.

The most recognizable championship team was Detroit’s last in 1984. That year has been dubbed "The Roar of ‘84" by baseball media.

The clubhouse consisting of All-Stars such as Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker; Darrell Evans, Dave Bergman, Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon, Tom Brookens, Larry Herndon and Jack Morris got off to a torrid 35-5 start to the season. The Tigers recorded a franchise-record 104 wins that season and met the San Diego Padres in the World Series.

Kirk Gibson’s first memorable postseason homer didn’t come in Dodger Blue. With the Tigers leading Game 6 by the score of 5-4, Goose Gossage would have been wise to pitch around Gibson. But Sparky Anderson could be heard screaming from the dugout, "He don't want to walk you!" Gibson blasted a 1-0 fastball into the right field upper deck to clinch the game and series.

For the next two decades the Tigers fell into futility. Trammell managed the team in 2003 and it came within one loss of tying the 1962 Mets record for the most losses in a 162-game season. With a 43-119 record, Detroit finished 47 games out of first place that year.

When Jim Leyland took over in 2006, the team quickly came back to prominence. The Tigs reached the World Series that year with star players like Magglio Ordóñez, Justin Verlander and Placido Polanco. They went into the Fall Classic as heavy favorites over the St. Louis Cardinals but lost in five games.

Perhaps the most memorable moment in Tigers history came from a near-perfect game. On June 2, 2010, Armando Galarraga was dealing a perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning when Jason Donald dribbled a ground ball to first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera tossed the ball to Galarraga at first and it appeared to be the final out of the game, completing the perfect game and no-hitter.

But first-base umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe even though replays clearly showed he was out by a step or two. Joyce admitted his missed call later saying, "I just cost that kid a perfect game."
