Chicago White Sox Betting OddsMLB baseball Betting Online: The Chicago White Sox were founded in 1893 as a Western League franchise in Iowa called the Sioux City Cornhuskers.

The team moved to St. Paul, Minnesota two years later where they took on the Saints moniker. It was relocated to the South Side of Chicago in 1900 where the White Sox became one of the eight charter members of the American League.

The club was originally called the Chicago White Stockings. The name reportedly changed because the local newspaper needed to shorten the "Stockings" headline to just Sox. Common nicknames for the team are the Sox, the South Siders, the Pale Hose and the ChiSox.

Chicago played home games at South Side Park until 1910. They moved into iconic Comiskey Park in 1911 and played there for more than 80 years. Since 1991, the Sox home park as been U.S. Cellular Field and is called by fans "The Cell."

The White Sox won their first World Series in 1906. They won again in 1917 with future Hall of Famers like Eddie Cicotte, Eddie Collins and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Two seasons later, however, would leave a timeless black cloud over the franchise.

Chicago went back to the World Series in 1919 and was heavily favored against the Cincinnati Reds. But before the nine-game series started, wiseguy money flooded in on the underdog Reds. After the Sox lost in eight games, conspiracies started to surface claiming that they had purposely tried to lose.

An investigation regarding a fixed Cubs game spawned another about the White Sox in September of 1920. During the investigation, Cicotte and Jackson confessed to throwing the prior year’s World Series for money. Commissioner Kenesaw Landis came down with a swift and heavy hammer and banned Cicotte, Jackson as well as seven other players from Major League Baseball for life.

The players were acquitted under law because their signed confessions mysteriously disappeared from the Cook County courthouse. This corrupt team is known in baseball lore as the "Black Sox."

Chicago would return as AL pennant winners in 2005 after the mercurial Ozzie Guillen was hired as manager the year before. Guillen preached speed and defense in his philosophy and the Sox were known for grinding out wins. As a heavy favorite, they defeated the Houston Astros in four games in the Fall Classic that season.

Although much less publicized that Boston’s previously-broken curse, the White Sox carried a longer World Series title drought of 88 years before 2005.

The two Chicago-based franchises participate in the Crosstown Classic annually. The Cubs and White Sox didn’t actually meet in a regular season game until 1997 when interleague play was integrated into the schedule. But this is arguably baseball’s oldest rivalry as these clubs have been competing for their city's fans since 1901. The Cubs hold the edge by a large margin.
