MLB Baseball Betting Odds: The Boston Red Sox were founded in 1901 as one of the eight original members of the American League. The franchise has played in fabled Fenway Park since 1912. The tight quarters at Fenway provide fans with an intimate and unparalleled baseball experience. Every Red Sox home game since May 15, 2003 has been sold out which is an MLB record.
The team moniker was selected by original owner John I. Taylor. Other Boston sports franchises had been known as the "Red Stockings" so Taylor created an abbreviated version. Common nicknames for the club are the Sox, the BoSox and the Olde Towne Team.
Boston won the first-ever World Series in 1903 by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Sox would go on to win four more titles by 1918, but then the “Curse of the Bambino” struck and they fell into one of the lengthiest championship droughts in sports history.
In 1918, Red Sox brass opted to sell Babe Ruth to the Yankees. From that season on, Boston fans would endure 86 gut-wrenching seasons without a championship.
But the wait ended in 2004 when the Sox came back from a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS to dramatically defeat rival New York and go on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
The comeback against the Yankees marked the first time in baseball history any team had won a seven-game series after trailing three games to none. Legend has it that Kevin Millar and other teammates did shots of liquor before Game 4 to inspire confidence. There was also the notorious “bloody sock” performance by Curt Schilling where he gave up one run in 7 innings in Game 6 after the team medical staff sutured his ankle tendon.
Red Sox lore is filled with iconic moments such as this. During the 1975 World Series, Boston was up against the mighty Reds who were known as The Big Red Machine. They were tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the 12th inning of Game 6 but Carlton “Pudge” Fisk delivered one of the most memorable homers in postseason history. With the ball headed toward left field and slicing left, Fisk frantically waved his arms to the right trying to will the ball to stay fair. The ball struck the left field foul pole above the Green Monster and the BoSox won 7-6.
Bill Buckner was the brunt of an infamous blooper 11 years later. While playing the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series, the Red Sox were one strike away from winning Game 6 and the championship. The NBC telecast had already named the World Series MVP and a message appeared on the Shea Stadium scoreboard congratulating Boston as world champions.
But then the Babe’s Curse reared its ugly head again. Following three straight singles, Mookie Wilson hit a slow ground ball to first base that looked like the game-ending out, but the ball went between Buckner’s legs and the Mets scored two runs to win the game.
The Red Sox have been one of the best teams in baseball since 2003. The storied rivalry with the Yankees attracts fans from across the globe and is considered to be one of the best in American sports. Both teams have large fan bases smattered throughout the country and draw record road crowds.
Boston has won seven World Series titles, 12 league pennants, six East Division crows and seven Wild Card berths. Notable Hall of Famer players that were inducted in a Red Sox uniform are Wade Boggs, Carlton Fisk, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice.
