MLB Baseball Betting Odds: The Orioles were established in 1894 and were permanently moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1954. As one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, Baltimore first played in Milwaukee as the Brewers in 1901 but then became the Browns after relocating to St. Louis. The club spent 52 uneventful years in St. Louis before moving to the East Coast.
The Orioles moniker comes from Maryland’s official state bird. They are a member of the AL East Division and play games at Camden Yards, which opened in 1992. Common nicknames for the team include the O’s and Birds.
Baltimore enjoyed its most successful years from 1964 to 1983. During that timeframe the franchise won seven Division crowns, six pennants and three World Series.
Perhaps the biggest trade in team history, which coincided with the team’s turnaround, was acquiring Frank Robinson from the Cincinnati Reds for Milt Pappas in 1965. Robinson won the AL Most Valuable Player award the next season as he propelled the O’s to a World Series title. He also won the Triple Crown that year after leading the Junior Circuit in batting average, home runs and runs batted in.
Other notable players that went into the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame with an Orioles cap on are George Sisler, Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken Jr.
Robinson and Ripken Jr. are considered to be two of the greatest players to ever play their respective positions -- third base and shortstop. Ripken holds the all-time record for consecutive games played, surpassing Lou Gehrig on September 6, 1995, and ending his career with a streak of 2,632 straight games played.
The Cubs are plagued by the Curse of the Billy Goat but Baltimore is dealing with its own stretch of futility. The Birds haven’t put together a winning season since 1997 and have finished third or worse in the AL East for the last 13 years.
Some point to the retirement of Ripken Jr. as the start of the downward spiral but it actually goes beyond that.
Jon Miller, one of the most recognizable broadcasters in baseball, was hired by Baltimore as the play-by-play announcer in 1983. The Orioles won the World Series in Miller’s first year with the club and enjoyed many prosperous years over the next decade. Miller was a good-luck charm of sorts.
But Miller wasn’t a homer over the airwaves and that unbiased approach ultimately led to his termination. Orioles owner Peter Angelos had no intention of renewing Miller’s contract after the 1996 season because he thought “Jon should be more orange and black.” Some O’s fans believe the expiration of Miller’s contract created a curse that resulted in the team’s ongoing demise that’s spanned more than a decade.
