MLB Betting Online: The Atlanta Braves were founded in 1871 and stand as one of the National League’s two remaining charter members. The franchise was founded in Massachusetts in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings. After toying with a few different names, the team settled on the Boston Braves for the first half of the 20th century.
The Braves won the 1914 World Series despite getting out to a 26-40 start. At that point, they were 15 games out of first place. But from July 6 to the end of the season, Boston went 66-18 to move into first place. It became the only team to win a pennant after being in last place on the Fourth of July.
The Braves were heavy underdogs in the World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics. But Boston swept the A’s in the series, capturing its first championship.
In 1953, owner Lou Perini announced that he was moving the team to Milwaukee. The city opened their arms to its first MLB franchise and the team responded by going 92-62 that year.
Prolific hitters Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron powered the offense while shut-down pitchers Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette and Bob Buhl fortified the rotation. The Braves won the pennant for the first time in nine years in 1957, and went on to win the World Series against the Yankees.
Aaron had another MVP-caliber season in 1958, and led Milwaukee back to the Fall Classic. But New York got the better of them this time, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the Series.
On their third city stint, the Braves arrived in Atlanta in 1966. The team started off in mediocrity and then slipped into futility from 1970 to 1981, posting only two winning seasons in that period.
The lone consolation during that timeframe was Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s long-standing career home run record. On the first game of the 1973 season, Aaron tied the record with home run No. 714. Four days later, in front of his home fans and a national television audience, he broke Ruth's mark with a home run to left-center off Dodgers’ lefty Al Downing.
In 1976, the team was sold to media mogul Ted Turner. He would become the Mark Cuban of the next two decades with a hands-on owner approach. The Braves essentially became "America's Team" because most of their games were broadcast nationally on one of Turner’s networks, TBS.
Under the tutelage of manager Bobby Cox, the Braves became one of the most successful franchises in MLB history over a period of two decades. From 1991 to 2005, Atlanta won its division an unprecedented 14 straight times.
With an uncanny pitching staff consisting of Greg Maddox, Tom Glavine, Steve Avery, and John Smoltz and hitters such as Chipper Jones, Ron Gant, Terry Pendleton and David Justice, the Braves reached the World Series three times in a four-year span and won the Fall Classic in 1995.
As a franchise, the Braves are the only team to have won the World Series in three different cities. They have captured 16 divisional titles and nine National League pennants.
The Bravos currently play home games at Turner Field. Fredi Gonzàlez took over for Bobby Cox in 2011 and he has a wealth of young talent to work with. Players like Brian McCann, Jair Jurrjens, Tommy Hanson and Jason Heyward should keep Atlanta competitive for years to come.
