Doug O'Neill - Trainer

Doug O'Neill began training in 1994 and has been a perennial leader on the southern California racing circuit. In 2012 he rose to the highest level of the sport by saddling I'll Have Another to win the 138th Kentucky Derby and he would also go on to capture the Preakness stakes but was retired before a run for the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes.

Pedigree

Goldencents' pedigree leaves some uncertainty about his aptitude for the Derby's 1 1/4 miles.

Goldencents Kentucky Derby Betting OddsKentucky Derby Betting: We are about to hit the month of May, and that means that it's time to look at the Triple Crown lines here at BookMaker Sportsbook. Join us for all of our previews of all of the potential contenders for the race, including Goldencents, who is going to enter the Run for the Roses looked upon as one of the serious contenders that could ultimately win the Triple Crown.

Last year was the year that Trainer Doug O'Neill really made a name for himself. This trainer has become one of the most known in the Southern California circuit, and he brought I'll Have Another to victory in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. If O'Neill is going to have a repeat performance this year, it is clear that Goldencents is the only horse that he has that would really give him that chance.

Jockey Kevin Krigger is really a bit of an unknown at this level, but he has been the only jockey that Goldencents has ever known. That type of consistency really will help out a horse at any level for sure, especially one that has run as quickly as Goldencents has in the lead up races to the fight on the Triple Crown betting lines.

Goldencents has four wins to his credit, and he came right out of the blocks in his first every stakes race to post a 101 Beyer Speed Rating. That's a 'Yo!' if we ever saw one for a horse. Over the course of the rest of his prep races leading up to the Santa Anita Derby, the speeds came down just a bit, but there was clearly no shame in the 97 that he ran in the San Felipe Stakes in spite of the fact that he finished fourth. That run was the only time in his career that he placed outside of the Top 2, but that was a solid field that featured several contenders on the Triple Crown gambling lines such as Hear the Ghost, Flashback, and Tiz a Minister.

The run at the Santa Anita Derby though, was the one that really had the eyes of the horse racing world watching closely. Goldencents stuck on the lead pack for the whole race, split into the lead down the stretch, and ultimately held off a charging Flashback to avenge one of his few defeats. In the end, Goldencents ran a 106 speed rating, and that's the type of statement that you love to see out of a horse on the eve of the Kentucky Derby.

Though Verrazano and Orb are clearly the two top contenders on the Triple Crown wagering lines, there is no doubt that Goldencents really is right there with them as well. He is just a 7 to 1 underdog as we approach the first week of May, and there is no doubt that a favorable post draw at Churchill Downs could see him ultimately be one of the top favorites to watch for in the Run for the Roses. Perhaps O'Neill could get that bed of roses for his colt for the second straight year.
