Joey Logano amongst favorites to defend Duck Commander 500 crown on FOX Saturday

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

By  Andrew Ryan

For the mass majority of the rest of the Sprint Cup season, we're going to see drivers racing at either tri-ovals or standard ovals rather than being on short tracks or road courses. One of the signature events of the year on a tri-oval will take place on Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway, as 43 of the best drivers in the world will take aim at the Duck Commander 500 title.

Immediately what should jump off the page is the fact that there really isn't a runaway favorite in this race. Matters are so level that the man who is the favorite, Kevin Harvick, has actually never won a race here at Texas Motor Speedway in his career.

After the top three favorites, there is a host of nine drivers between 10 to 1 and 15 to 1, and discerning any of the top 12 contenders or so is going to be quite tough to do.

4: The number of wins which Jimmie Johnson has at this track in his career. He's got over 900 laps led on this track as well in the No. 48 Chevy. Both are easily track records for a track which has only been open for a total of 28 races leading into Saturday.

6: The number of Top 10 finishes in a row for Martin Truex Jr. Truex is only third in the Sprint Cup standings, and his Chevy has yet to win a race this year, but he did lead 23 laps at the STP 500 and ran well at Bristol, which could make him ready for a breakout performance.

"I'm pretty excited to go back to Texas and try to defend our win. That place has quickly turned into one of my favorite tracks on the circuit. It's just a place that suits me and my driving style well and we as a team have excelled at since I came over here to Team Penske." – Joey Logano on his defense of his last win at Texas Motor Speedway in the spring race of last season

Matt Kenseth: Kenseth only has two wins on this track in his career, but he is also the all-time leader in Top 5 finishes with 13 in his 25 starts. Kenseth is only 13th right now in the NASCAR standings, and he has yet to finish better than fourth in a race this year, but he has run into a lot of problems on the track that he normally wouldn't be coming across and should be a great play here at 10 to 1.

Kevin Harvick: Sure, Harvick has never won here, but he has dominated so far this season at similar tracks in Atlanta and in Las Vegas. We know that the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing machine is going to practice well and qualify well on this track, and the fact of the matter is that there isn't another driver at the moment running as well on tri-ovals or similar tracks as is Harvick. It's still early in the season, and that 4 to 1 price is perhaps a bit low for our likings, but it's tough to see anyone but Harvick as a sure thing Top 5 finisher.
