The story of Joseph Benavidez is a well-known one in the MMA community. On the last day of a personal trip to Sacramento, Benavidez met former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber by chance. Dominick Cruz, who beat Benevidez by unanimous decision last August, makes his first WEC Bantamweight title defense in what promises to be a thrilling throwdown at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on August 18.

Cruz, the current WEC Bantamweight champ, bowled over Brian Bowles for two rounds to seize the title at WEC 47. Although Bowles bowed out with a hand injury in a rather anticlimactic finish, Cruz was having his way with the former champ. Once again, Cruz’ hyperactive pace and immaculate footwork baffled his opponent, who could not muster any offense.
